…..so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. But we make it so complex! Today is Trinity Sunday when we focus on the fact that God is essentially beyond our understanding, but offers us a relationship. Unfathomable, you bet!
So why have the cross to illustrate what I’m thinking? Because it is visceral and real and it gives an insight into the essential connection between us and God. Profound love. This emanates from the realtionship within God, between Father, Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit. Hear the words of the apostle John, in his first letter… ‘In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son (Jesus) as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.’ There it is, God loves us. Full stop. Try and argue that one away! Even experiencing death…followed by resurrection!!!
When I understood this at the age of 18, I wept, until I could weep no more. I still do in odd moments, even as I write this. As for the Holy Spirit, well again, quite simply, the Spirit is the energising presence of God’s love for all humanity. Religion can sometimes make God inaccessible; available to the chosen few. This is a distortion of the reality of the unbounded love of God.
Here are some words offered as a prayer from the Anglican Church’s Book of Common prayer of 1662;
Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve:
Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
There it is. Just let the reality sink in; God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit are in a relationship with you, whether you know it, or believe it, or doubt it!
Take a moment to ponder the photograph above and just let the Spirit speak into your heart, mind and soul.
May the Lord bless you and keep you and shine the divine love deep into your soul, now and forever.
