Connection

I hope you can see the marks on the walls of this sea cave, on the south coast of the Isle of Arran. Take a moment to discern the markings which are of some age.

There is no consensus on the age of these marks, although they are regarded as being Pictish, the original language of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. They absolutely captivated me and just tracing them made some connection with those who had carved them. When and why they were created is lost to the mists of time.

But they represent something taken from the mind of their creator to communicate with others. We talk today of our connected world, but we have been trying to connect and communicate throughout our evolution; in many and varied ways.

The added element to this journey of communication is the spiritual part of our lives. I have no idea what these marks mean, but I wonder if they have some sense of individuals or more likely a group, reaching out to something beyond the physical realm? I could make a whole lot assumptions here, but I won’t. The interesting thing is that they are within a cave; often seen as being an attempt at reaching beyond light, into an ‘underworld’.

Darkness and light resonates throughout world religions. It mirrors what is there within our our hearts and souls and psyche. It was there in the Pictish people who gathered in this cave.

We each have our own unique beliefs and understanding; faith is needed by both believer and non-believer. We develop our own belief system to help us make sense of ourselves and the world.

My own belief system has changed and moved throughout my life and continues to do so. Nothing is static. Take a moment to reflect on your belief and value the connection with what is beyond the visible and explainable!!

For me, that is the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists….mindblowing and challenging!
